Momentum

Who We Are

Momentum is a Community Economic Development (CED) organization that offers hope and opportunity to people living in poverty.

Momentum is a not-for-profit society that has been partnering with low-income Calgarians to develop their productive futures since 1991.

Our History

Momentum started out in 1991 as MCC Employment Development, a program of the Mennonite Central Committee Alberta. The program was created in Calgary, and initially provided training to immigrants to enter the trades.

In 1994, small business training was offered to the underemployed and later micro business loans were provided.

In 1999, money management training started along with a savings incentive program. This assisted people living below the poverty line to save money. Youth programs in entrepreneurship and financial literacy programs were also created.

In an effort to address the inequities of access to technology, a public access computer lab was opened in 2000. Participants could now take advantage of the Internet to search for jobs.

On January 1, 2002 the organization became an independent, community-based, charitable organization – legally separate from the Mennonite Central Committee Alberta.

In 2006, the organization celebrated fifteen years in the community. As part of its growth and evolution, the organization introduced its new name “Momentum” to better represent its impact on individuals and the full breadth of programs and services it provides.

Today, Momentum works with over 3000 people annually and remains committed to the culture, values, and programs that have been built over the last 16 years.

Our services are offered with respect for race, colour, ancestry and ethnic origin, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, ability and age.
